A Brief History of BARC

per VE3BRJ

I joined the club in 1994. At that time it was called TIARA ( Thousand Islands ARA).   The name was changed to BARC in 1998 at the same time that it became RAC-affiliated.   The club constitution and by-laws were also created at that time.

Club activities have included:

Instructional classes in Amateur radio

Monthly guest speakers

Weekly club breakfasts

Annual involvement in Field Day

Fox hunts (hidden transmitter hunts)

During the Ice Storm in 1998, the members helped to provide  communications between the shelters in Brockville and the counties.   Assisting in community events, such as Santa Claus parade, Mother-Daughter walks, Pumpkin Patrol, Senior Winter Games.

VA3LGA Repeater was installed on a commercially owned 500 ft. tower in Lansdowne (often called the Ivy Lea Tower) in July, 1996.  The daily ARTAS net began in Dec., 1993 by VE3GBG and taken over by VE3KFY, who still manages it.  The Thousand Islands Net is on every Friday night and is sponsored by the club.
